Disney Linen-Like Books by Whitman

FEATURED BOOKS
1930s and 1940s Disney Linen Like Books!
From 1935 to 1942 Whitman Publishing came out with a series of mosty oversized
Disney storybooks for children with soft covers and pages printed on linen like
paper stock. These large storybooks are beautifully illustrated in color –
what
an understatement! They are truly works of art! The illustrations for
these books were done by the Disney artists themselves, and the stories are
from the
classic Disney animated feature films and shorts of the period. These
books truly reflect the artistic and creative genius of the Disney animation
artists
from the early days at the studio.
But Whitman only published 22 titles in this format from 1935 to 1942! (See
the
checklist of these books in the box on the right.) And due to their size,
attractiveness, and intended market – children (notoriously hard on their
favorite books!) – these books have indeed become very scarce, especially in
collectible condition. The artwork and the subjects, some of which are of
Disney's less well known characters and short films, make these highly sought
after by fans and collectors alike.
Foundling Books has put together a very nice collection of these scarce,
classic, Disney linen like books for our customers. For a limited time, these
books will be offered ONLY on this website. In addition to the descriptions of
each book, we have also provided below wonderful color pictures of each of
these classic books for your enjoyment. Please take a look and if you decide to
purchase any these true Disney treasures, be sure to send an email right away
to reserve the book. These will not last very long! Be sure to review Our Terms
at the bottom of our home page before ordering for all of the payment options,
as well as information about shipping and handling costs and our customer
satisfaction guarantee.
The only way to order any of the books listed below is by sending us an email
to reserve your selection. These books are NOT listed in our catalog!

# 1022 Disney, Walt,
MICKEY MOUSE AND HIS FRIENDS
Racine, WI: Whitman, 1936.
Softcover 1st Edition, 4to 10pp. Good+/ No Dust
Jacket Some light edgewear; a
few small scrapes to lower front corner of cover.
Head and foot of spine is torn
to top and bottom staples, but intact between
them. Corners of first couple
pages creased, and lower corners separating
slightly. Covers and pages with some
light soiling. One of the earliest books
in the Whitman's linen-like, oversized
storybooks series of the 1930s and 40s.
These are very nice illustrations of the
early characterizations from the
Disney animators. The book clearly has
delighted the younger set, and seen some
use, but is remarkably intact and is
still a beautiful example of the earlier
representations of these delightful
movie stars. Here are Mickey Mouse, Minnie
Mouse, Donald Duck (with the long
bill of his early years) , Horace
Horsecollar, Goofy, Clarabelle Cow, Pluto, and
the Three Little Pigs, all in
one, cute Christmas poem from 1936. These
characters were the stars of the
Disney Silly Symphonies animated film shorts.
The Silly Symphonies and this
book both predated the release of the first full
length animated feature film,
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. $225.00

# 1015 Disney, Walt,
PLUTO THE PUP
. Racine, WI: Whitman, 1937. 1st Edition. Softcover, 4to 10pp. Very Good/ No
Dust Jacket Edgewear to spine with 1 inch tear to bottom of spine, very light
soiling to covers, rear cover (last page) has a 7 inch tear tape repaired on
both sides, pages some light age fading. Wonderfully illustrated in bright
colors by the Disney illustrators, and printed on stiff, linen-like paper. A
very nice example of the early popular storybooks based on the loveable stars
of early Disney animated films. Despite its age and some use, this scarce
example of wonderfully illustrated, colorful, Disney storybooks is sure to
delight the child of any age! These Whitman linen-like storybooks were only
published between 1935 and 1942. Pluto is, of course, the everyman's dog, and
this is one of the best examples of his early, though enduring,
popularity.
Brightly colored illustrations, and a great story make this one
sure to please any Disney fan or collector. Whitman # 894. $225.00

# 1023 Disney, Walt,
FERDINAND THE BULL
Racine, WI: Whitman, 1938. Softcover 1st Edition, 4to 10pp. Very Good/ No Dust
Jacket Some very light edgewear, and staples are rusting. Bottom of front cover
(and first page) has a small (1 inch) closed tear. A few very light smudges at
bottom of pages (a page turner forgot to wash their hands). Oversized storybook
printed on linen like paper is full of brightly colored illustrations from the
classic short film. The minor defects do not detract at all from this
delightful book. A wonderful version of this Academy Award Winning (Best
Cartoon) Disney animated short film. The film was released on November 25,
1938, and was based on the classic story by Munro Leaf, originally illustrated
by Robert Lawson. This book was published contemporaneously with the film
release. According to Dave Smith's Disney A to Z, many of the animated
characters were based on Disney employees: the matador was a characterization
of Walt himself, who even provided the voice of Ferdinand, and Milt Kahl, one
of the Nine Old Men, was the voice of Ferdinand's mother. $300.00
